June 7, 2006 - Polar View's River Ice monitoring service highlighted on European Space Agency's news portal Polar View's flood forecasting service in Newfoundland and Labrador is making satellite radar imager available on-line. The service, which uses a computer model to simulate ice conditions on the Exploits River, has become extremely helpful in providing advance warning to residents of smaller towns in Newfoundland and Labrador, the provinces Emergency Measures Organizations as well as the Department of Environment and Conservations.

As part of the Polar View GSE project, FIMR has successfully delivered High-Resolution Ice Thickness Charts and Ice Forecasts over the Baltic Sea from December 2005 to May 2006. Users included the Finnish Maritime Administration, Finstaship Ltd, Ice Advisors Ltd and Swedish Maritime Administration. During the next ice season, they expect to attract more users and expand their services to also include Snow Monitoring.
Excerpt from the recent Newfoundland and Labrador Speech From the Throne: "Mr. Speaker and Members of the House of Assembly: Education is at the foundation of the research and development revolution that is spawning incredible new opportunities on the cutting edge. Newfoundland and Labrador is swiftly earning a reputation for gold, not only in the athletic arena, but in the technological arena as well. C-CORE at Memorial University recently won a key contract from the European Space Agency to lead a large multinational network of companies and institutes representing Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom in a special homegrown initiative, the "Polar View" program, that will extensively monitor by satellite the sensitive Arctic and Antarctic regions for environmental, economic and security reasons."
Polar View has recently submitted a proposal to the International Polar Year (IPY) International Programme Office to provide geospacial information for IPY missions both in the Arctic and Antarctic. Since this submission, the national ice centres (collectively, the International Ice Charter Working Group) have approached Polar View to become the common portal of IPY relevant ice information and we are currently working on the details on how this cooperation will take shape.
