Event: Internationl Conference on Arctic Exploration
Location: Philadelphia, USA
Date: May 22nd to May 24th, 2008

In conjunction with the International Polar Year (2007-8), an interdisciplinary conference on North American Arctic (and sub-Arctic) exploration will be held in Philadelphia. Some of the themes to be addressed include, strategic issues propelling northern exploration, consequences of culture contact (Western-Inuit/Inughuit relations),the impact of Arctic exploration on popular culture, advances in travel and communications technologies and changes in navigational techniques.

International Symposium on Ice: Using New Technology to Understand Water Ice Interaction
Location: Vancouver, Canada
Date: Jul. 6th to Jul. 11th, 2008

The 19th edition of the IAHR International Syposium on Ice will be held in Vancouver between July 6 and 11, 2008. Some of the main topics of the Symposium include:

- Environmental concerns in ice-infested water

- River, lake, and reservoir ice engineering
- Formation and evolution of ice

Event: ICETECH 2008 - International Conference and Exhibition on Performance of Ships and Structures in Ice
Location: Banff, Canada
Date: Jul. 20th to Jul. 23rd, 2008

International Conference and Exhibition on Performance of Ships and Structures in Ice is organized and hosted by the Arctic Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. The Conference is a high level international non-profit event with peer reviewed papers and a small exhibition (with exhibitors such as the US Arctic Research Commission, Transport Canada, and some private sector entities). It covers subjects including of course new ice resistant ships and structures as well as ice engineering, global arctic future, operations, safety and rescue, and so on. Event: European Space Agency's 2nd Joint MERIS and (A)ATSR Workshop
Location: Frascati, Italy
Dates: Sep. 22nd to Sep. 26th, 2008

The workshop is open to researchers, scientists and students working in either public or private sector organisations active in the field of remote sensing with (A)ATSR and MERIS data and to representatives from national, European and International space agencies. The Objectives are:

  • Present the latest results and status of research and development projects (including AO and cat-1).
  • Review capabilities and achievements in the use of MERIS and (A)ATSR data for applications development in the land, marine and atmosphere domains.
  • Update MERIS and (A)ATSR data users on instrument performance and product quality.
  • Formulate recommendations for improved data access and utilization, including ordering and analysis tools, algorithms and new product development.
  • Foster enhanced collaboration between MERIS and (A)ATSR research groups.
  • Inform users on the current status of the GMES Sentinel 2 and 3 payloads.

Event: 15th International Symposium on Polar Sciences - "Polar Ecosystems: Biodiversity and Adaptation"
Location: Incheon, Korea
Date: Sep. 24th to Sep. 26th, 2008

The Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) announces the 15th International Symposium on Polar Sciences. This year's theme is "Polar Ecosystems: biodiversity and adaptation." The purpose of the symposium is to bring together polar ecologists and biologists and to provide an international forum for exchanging ideas and results. The symposium will focus on ecology, classification, cold adaptation, and natural products of polar organisms. In addition, the conference organizers would like to start discussing and developing an international research effort using Araon, the upcoming Korean icebreaker.

Event: Russian Academy of Sciences 8th Annual conference: "Nature of the Shelf and Archipelagos of the European Arctic"
Location: Murmansk, Russia
Date: Nov. 9th, 2008

The Russian Academy of Sciences announces its 8th annual conference, "Nature of the Shelf and Archipelagos of the European Arctic," to be held 9-11 November 2008, in Murmansk, Russia. The conference will focus on important aspects of scientific studies of the shelf and archipelagos of the European Arctic, plans and research programs for further studies, and international scientific cooperation.

Event: Arctic Shelf: Strategy for the Future
Location: Murmansk, Russia
Date: Nov. 12th to Nov. 14th, 2008

ArcticShelf Association now, for the fourth time, is arranging "Oil and Gas of Arctic Shelf" international conference and welcoming you to take part. Traditionally the Conference is held under the auspices of the Governor of the Murmansk region and with support of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Industry and Energy of the Russian Federation. The main theme of the conference is the further development of a partnership between domestic and international government authorities, enterprises, banks, research organizations, oil producing and service companies with the view of creating a favorable investment climate in the region which could give an impetus to long-term growth of the natural resources complex.
