Project Achievements

Achieving Success

Polar view has succeeded in building a reputation as the world's foremost provider of polar monitoring services. The Polar View team is unprecedented and is likely the strongest and most comprehensive team in the world of polar EO experts, service providers and end users. Polar View has participants from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Sweden, UK and USA. Polar View has been instrumental in promoting standardization and best practices across all components of its service portfolio.

Since the kick-off in July 2005, Polar View has delivered more than 5500 EO-derived products, including 3800 local/regional produced derived from more than 2000 ENVISAT and RADARSAT SAR scenes, and 1700 global products derived from daily passive microwave and ENVISAT GMM acquisitions. This makes Polar View one of the largest users of EO data in the world. The Polar View network has expanded significantly since its inception and now encompasses 21 service providers and 57 core user organisations, with 64 service level agreements (SLA) in place.

Users are central to the success of Polar View, and the observed network expansion is a direct result of the high level of user engagement achieved and a worldwide growing interest of users in Polar View services. Core users of Polar View services include predominantly governmental organisations with international, national, regional and local responsibilities, as well as a smaller number of commercial and not-for-profit private sector organisations. These core user bodies represent a much larger group of end users that benefit directly from the services (e.g. ships, hunters moving on the ice). A conservative estimate places the number of end users of Polar View services in excess of 1000.

Summary of Accomplishments

The following tables present a summary of Polar Views activities and accomplishments over the last 2 years. In preparing this overview, we have captured the key events, whether they be the launch of a expanded service line, participation of a new team member, addition of new users group or the successful delivery of over 5500 products, that have shaped and guided our project since its inception.
